There are approximately 350 species of termite that occur in Australia, most of which are grass and debris feeders and are very beneficial to the environment. There are currently 30 species of which achieve pest status and can cause devastating damage to homes. Termites are often called “White Ants”. At first glance because of their appearance, shape, size and social habits it is easy to see why they could be mistaken for ants. They are in fact part of the order blattodea which is the same as that of a cockroach.
The population of a termite colony can number well into the millions. The nests can take various forms. Some are mound nest visible on the ground. Some termite species prefer to build their nests way up in trees. Some nests are subterranean (underground) and almost impossible to find. Here at PestMen we understand that termites can be a serious problem and cost thousands of dollars worth of damage. The termite treatment cost can be significant with severe infestations. Therefore we take termites very seriously. One in three houses on the Gold Coast alone have been infested by termites or have termite damage.
A Termite inspection should be carried out on your home on a regular basis by a licenced professional. The minimum recommendation made by the Australian Standards is every 12 months regardless of what type of house you have or termite protection your house may have.
