There are many reasons we don’t want to see cockroaches inside our homes and businesses. They carry diseases that may be transferable to humans, in and on their bodies. Cockroaches tend to stay close to their moisture and food source. This is why we usually see cockroaches in our kitchens at home and in restaurants.

In Australia it is important we keep up with regular pest control and maintenance to keep them at bay, keeping your homes and businesses healthy and safe.

How do we do it?

  • High quality, low allergenic, low toxicity, low odour and environmentally friendly spraying inside and outside

  • The latest in Cockroach Baiting for when an area can’t be sprayed

  • Insecticidal powders for treating cracks and crevices where cockroaches like to hide

  • Roof void and wall cavity dusting

  • Cockroach monitoring stations

  • Highly efficient aerosol spraying for fast knockdown

German Cockroaches

German cockroaches are a lot smaller than the cockroaches you usually find inside your house.  German cockroaches are 12-15mm long whereas the larger American/Australian cockroach is about 30-40mm.  This means there could be hundreds making their home hidden in a single crack and crevice.  They are a big problem in commercial kitchens as well as residential.  German cockroaches are the most prolific breeders of all the pest cockroaches, taking as little as 40 days to develop from hatching to adulthood.  Egg cases contain 30 to 40 eggs!

They can quickly get out of hand.  Due to their behaviour and where they like to live (hidden in cracks and crevices) German cockroaches are very hard to get in control of.  In most cases they must be treated by a professional.  If you think you have a German cockroach problem in your home it would be best to give PestMen a call.

The following information is to give you as a customer the information on the products we use and how we apply them. Keeping your house and business pest free!

Residual Spraying

There are multiple options and products we can use with regard to a residual insecticide spray against Cockroaches. Around a building or home we use the least toxic but most effective general purpose Pyrethrin based chemical available. This will stop the cockroaches from coming into your house and kill the ones inside for 12 months. This insecticide is in the suspension concentrate group of insecticides that targets insects in particular. This reduces the toxicity to mammals (humans and pets  to a dramatic extent. A Pyrethrin based suspension concentrate is based on the naturally occurring Pyrethrin molecules produced by the plants like the Chrysanthemum Daisy. The way our spraying works is mainly by dermal entry. Directly spraying the insect is an obvious one, being absorbed through the insects cuticle. The other dermal entry which helps us to offer a 12 month warranty on cockroaches is a little more subtle. The surfaces that are sprayed dry and leave a layer of invisible Pyrethrin molecules that the Cockroach walk over the top of and rub their abdomen and other body parts against the surface.

Cockroach Baiting

Cockroach gel baiting has been a useful tool for pest control technicians for many years. Cockroach bait is used mainly where spraying can’t be done. A good example is places where food is kept or above food preparation surfaces. Baiting Cockroaches relies on the Cockroach ingesting the active ingredient. The active ingredient in our Cockroach gel bait is fipronil. Fipronil is a non repellent and is hard to detect by the unsuspecting Cockroach therefore ingesting the bait. The baits are designed to act slowly this ensures that the active ingredient is passed on to other Cockroaches and their young. A good tip is if you have some Cockroach bait in your cupboards is to try not to use any detergent close to the area. The detergent may make the bait less palatable for the Cockroach.

Cockroach Dusting

Dusting is an old school way of treating a Cockroach infestation directly. We carry out dusting treatments directly to Harborages. Meaning in the cracks and crevices that cockroaches like to live. The powder is an insecticidal dust with 2 active ingredients, one active ingredient Permethrin that kills the cockroaches and the other Triflumeron that disrupts the growth and hormonal action of the cockroaches stopping them from doing what they do best… Reproducing! The dust can only be applied to areas where we will not come into contact with a good place to apply the dust is behind dishwashers and beneath kitchen cupboards.

Helpful Hints and Tips on Cockroaches

Cockroaches represent a primitive and highly successful group of animals, whose origins date back to at least 300 million years. So rest assured they are going to be around our homes for some time to come. Living among decaying leaf litter, under bark of trees, in plants and vegetation (and where they certainly don’t belong) in our homes. Their wide distribution throughout Australia and close association with humans creates a problem. They carry diseases that may be transferable to humans in and on their bodies. Cockroaches tend to stay close to their moisture and food source. This is why we usually see cockroaches in our kitchen.

Here are a few PestMen tips:

Take all cleaning and washing up seriously, especially during humid days
Cockroaches prefer damp and humid conditions. They also eat ANYTHING. Like ourselves they are omnivorous. They will eat food or beverage and any dead or vegetable materials they can find. So leaving dishes in the sink and food on the bench is like Christmas for cockroaches.

Keep all foods in airtight containers
Keeping food in airtight containers can go a long way when it comes to pest.  It is extremely effective to eliminate a food source.  Especially for cockroaches.

Look out for leaking taps or places indoors where water collects
Check that there is no leaking plumbing in your home. Water leaks can create damp and humid conditions that are perfect for cockroaches to live.

If your property has a subfloor area, ensure it’s well ventilated and that water is able to properly drain away
Damp and humid conditions underneath your home that are perfect for cockroaches to live means they will be right beneath your feet.

Ensure garbage and compost containers are emptied often, have tightly closing lids and are stored well away from your house
Try to keep your bins empty well away from your house.  Any bins close to the house will attract cockroaches from far and wide.  We don’t want them crawling around on your external walls trying to find holes and cracks to access our house.

Avoid leaving pet’s water and food out, especially at room temperature unless absolutely necessary
This is a good tip to help with a lot of pests, not only cockroaches.  Keep pet food bowls empty.  Keep an eye on your pets while they are feeding if they don’t finish their food pick it up.  Cockroaches love pet food.  Cockroaches that are bred in laboratories are actually fed dog biscuits and water, so let’s make sure you’re not unwittingly carrying out any experiments on your own.

Ensure all cracks, crevices and gaps around pipes and other penetrations on the walls of your home are promptly sealed
Cockroaches can get into your home any number of way, especially around pipes. Making it hard for them to get inside and to establish themselves inside your house is a step closer to solving the problem.

Inspect any bags, packaging or boxes thoroughly before allowing them into your home
The source of a cockroach problem quite often can be caused by bringing them into your home in boxes and supplies.  If you move things from the roof or shed to another area to the house you could be spreading a cockroach problem.
