Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are extremely hard to eradicate without experience and proper training. Do it yourself bed bug products are not recommended and rarely successful. There is a strict code of practice that must be followed when carrying out bed bug work. http://medent.usyd.edu.au/bedbug/bedbug_cop.htm

The eggs are about the size of a grain of salt and are layed deep into the smallest of cracks and crevices. Bed bug treatment and removal is a highly specialized field; they require a very invasive procedure. A thorough inspection of every inch of the room has to be carried out. Most of the time Furniture will have to be partially taken apart and reassembled, carpet has to be pulled up around the edges and bed heads taken off walls etc. Call pest men as soon as possible to arrange a bed bug assessment if you think you have an infestation.

During daylight hours bed bugs spend their time hiding in cracks and crevices in fairly close proximity to the bed. They are usually detected by the irritation caused by the person sleeping with the infestation. Bed bugs have the tendency to test bite the victim resulting in a line of bites. For many people the bite can be painless and there is no allergic reaction. Some people on the other hand react to the bite and suffer from local swelling and a severe itch. Quite often people are confused by only one person getting bit by the bed bugs when sharing a bed. Although they do not seem to be involved with any serious disease transmission the bites are extremely irritating for the person with the infestation.

Bed bugs are usually associated with the sleeping areas of hotels, taverns and backpackers/hostels and aged care facilities but they are becoming increasingly prominent in homes. Blood spots on sheets, live bed bugs themselves will be found in cracks and crevices in furniture and bed frames, along the seams of mattresses, couches, in curtains, behind skirtings and behind wall paper.

How we remove Bed Bugs

Vacuum

PestMen use a vacuum with a fine tip nozzle to remove bed bugs and eggs.  The very small tip means that it can get into small cracks and crevices where they hide.  The Vacuum we use has a HEPA quality filter, standard filters will cause the infestation to spread.  The shedded skins of the bedbugs and the eggs will pass through a standard filter and can cause respiratory problems.  the Vacuum has a disposable dust bag that when finished we treat and dispose of.

Heat

PestMen use Steam Heat to kill bed bugs and the eggs.  The Steam produced by the steamer has a low vapour flow and high temperature that heats up infested areas to a minimum temperature of 80 degrees celsius.  This is an effective way of killing bed bugs and their eggs.

Chemical

Non chemical methods are considered to be management tools only.  They can be utilised to reduce the bed bug population but without insecticides it is unlikely to solve the bed bug problem.  the chemical treatment is applied underneath carpet edges under straight edges along seams of mattresses.  Insecticidal dust and aerosols are used when we are unable to treat with liquid chemicals..
